You’ve planned Disney for months. Your child has watched the ride video a hundred times. You finally reach the park—and their favorite attraction is closed.

It’s disappointing, but there are ways to reduce the chance of a nasty surprise.

Know the two kinds of ride closures

Scheduled refurbishment

Disney occasionally takes attractions out of service for maintenance or updates. When a closure is announced in advance, you can factor it into your travel and park planning. Check the official park calendar as your trip gets closer.

Unexpected downtime

Weather, technical issues and other operational reasons can close an attraction during the day. Even a ride that operated earlier may temporarily stop. You cannot guarantee every attraction will run on your chosen day.

Make a realistic must-do list

Ask each person which attractions they’re really excited about. Then check refurbishment notices and height requirements. If a must-do is unavailable for your whole trip, it’s better to know before you arrive.

What I’d do if a ride closed today

I’d check My Disney Experience for the current status, move to another nearby attraction or a snack break, and look again later. I wouldn’t spend hours standing nearby hoping for a reopening. If we had a Lightning Lane booked, I’d check the app for any changes or replacement options, which depend on the circumstances.

What I’d tell my kids

I’d say, “We’re going to try really hard to ride this,” rather than promising it’s guaranteed. Then we’d have a few other things to look forward to.
